Every port on the M4250-9G1F-PoE+, explained

Click a card to light up those ports on the panels above.

8 PoE+ ports8 on the panel

Ports 1 to 8 are gigabit RJ45 with PoE+ for encoders, decoders, cameras, touch panels and access points. Each port can deliver up to 30 W, within the switch's 110 W total.

Gigabit port 91 on the panel

A ninth gigabit RJ45 port without PoE, handy for a laptop, a control processor or an uplink to another switch.

SFP uplink1 on the panel

Port 10 takes a 1G SFP module for a fiber or copper uplink back to the core or the main AV rack.

USB-C console1 on the panel

A USB-C console port on the front for local CLI access from a laptop.

USB storage port1 on the panel

A USB-A port on the back for logs, packet captures, configuration files and firmware images.

Out-of-band management port1 on the panel

A 1G RJ45 service port on the back. Patch it to a separate management network so you can reach the switch even if the data ports are busy or misconfigured.

DC power input1 on the panel

The switch runs from an external power adapter, which plugs into the wall with a standard C13 AC cord. The DC jack is on the back.

  • Front LEDs: Power and PoE Max.
  • Reset button: on the front, next to the console port.

Power and PoE budget

The 110 W PoE budget is shared by ports 1 to 8. That covers, for example, eight 13 W endpoints with room to spare, or three 30 W PoE+ devices.

With every port powering devices at full load, the switch draws about 132 W. At idle with nothing connected it draws about 6.4 W.

There are no fans at all, so the switch is silent in a meeting room or behind a display.

Compare the M4250 series

One datasheet covers 13 M4250 models. They share the same software, AV profiles and management ports, and differ in size, port mix and PoE budget.

M4250 AV profiles and the AV web interface

Every M4250 ships pre-configured for audio and video over IP, so encoders and decoders can be plugged in and work without setup. IGMP Plus is on by default on VLAN 1, which keeps multicast video from flooding the network.

  • AV web interface: browse to the switch's IP address on port 8080 for the AV-specific settings. The regular IT web interface and a CLI are there too.
  • Audio profiles: Dante, Q-SYS, AES67 and AVB are built in.
  • Video profiles: NVX, AMX, Q-SYS, NDI, Kramer KDS, Aurora Multimedia, ZeeVee, Atlona, Dante, SDVoE and more, plus mixed audio, video and control profiles. Profiles are color coded and applied per port.
  • Switch-to-switch links: with Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG, two M4250s connected together trunk their VLANs and bundle multiple links automatically.
  • Fleet management: the NETGEAR Engage controller manages M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switches together.

M4250 management ports

All M4250 models share the same set of management ports, though where they sit (front or back) depends on the model.

  • Console: an RJ45 RS232 straight-through serial port and a USB-C console port, for local CLI access.
  • Out-of-band Ethernet: a 1G service port for a separate management network.
  • USB-A storage: for logs, packet captures, configuration files and firmware images.
  • Dual firmware: two firmware images and two configuration files, so updates cause minimal downtime.

Mounting and fan modes

  • Rackmount models can be mounted reversed when you want the ports facing the front of the rack. A second, included pair of ears sets the switch back 2 in. (about 5 cm) to leave room for cables.
  • Threaded holes underneath (4 x M5 on a 50 x 100 mm VESA pattern) and on the front (1 x M10 for clamps) allow mounting outside a rack.
  • Desktop models are meant for conference rooms, mobile studios, under a table or behind a screen, and mount with side flanges.
  • Fans are software controlled. Most models can switch the fans off entirely when the room temperature and PoE load are low enough, and offer Quiet and Cool modes otherwise. The M4250-9G1F-PoE+ is fanless.

Fan-off mode depends on ambient temperature and PoE load. Check your model's limits before closing it inside a cabinet or ceiling space.
