40 PoE+ ports40 on the panel
Gigabit RJ45 ports in five blocks of eight. Odd numbers are on the top row and even numbers on the bottom, counting left to right (ports 1 to 40).
Every port supports 802.3af and 802.3at PoE+ at up to 30 W per port, for encoders, decoders, cameras, access points and other AV endpoints.
8 SFP uplinks8 on the panel
Ports 41 to 48 on the right, in two rows of four. They are 1G SFP cages (1000BASE-X), for fiber or copper SFP links to other switches.
If you need 10G uplinks for larger video systems, the M4250-40G8XF-PoE+ has the same layout with SFP+ cages.
RJ45 console1 on the panel
The upper RJ45 next to the status lights is an RS232 straight-through serial console for local CLI access.
Out-of-band management1 on the panel
The lower RJ45 (OOB) is a dedicated 1G service port. Patch it to a separate management network so you can reach the switch even if the AV VLANs are down.
USB-C console1 on the panel
A USB-C console port under the status lights, an alternative to the RJ45 console when you plug in a laptop. The USB-A storage port is on the front display panel.
Power inlet1 on the panel
One C14 inlet with an on/off switch below it, at the far right of the port side.
On the front
- A black display panel with power, fan and PoE status LEDs
- A USB-A storage port for logs, configs and firmware
- Port status LEDs, so you can check links from the front of the rack
M4250-40G8F-PoE+ PoE budget and power
The 480 W PoE budget is shared by all 40 copper ports. A single internal supply feeds the switch through one C14 inlet.
| Load | Power draw | Heat |
|---|---|---|
| Standby, nothing connected | 46.4 W | 158 BTU/hr |
| All ports, no PoE | 59.5 W | 203 BTU/hr |
| All ports, full PoE | 624.8 W | 2,133 BTU/hr |
Example: 40 ports at 12 W each come to 480 W, which uses the whole budget. Bigger loads point to the M4250-40G8XF-PoE+ (960 W).
M4250-40G8F-PoE+ fans and airflow
Air flows side to side, so leave the sides of the switch clear in the rack.
This model can run with its fans off at 25 C ambient when PoE is light (about 30 W across 8 ports, no SFPs). With more load, use Quiet mode, which ranges from about 30 dBA to 47 dBA as PoE rises toward 480 W, or Cool mode (68 dBA).

M4250 AV profiles and the AV web interface
Every M4250 ships pre-configured for audio and video over IP, so encoders and decoders can be plugged in and work without setup. IGMP Plus is on by default on VLAN 1, which keeps multicast video from flooding the network.
- AV web interface: browse to the switch's IP address on port 8080 for the AV-specific settings. The regular IT web interface and a CLI are there too.
- Audio profiles: Dante, Q-SYS, AES67 and AVB are built in.
- Video profiles: NVX, AMX, Q-SYS, NDI, Kramer KDS, Aurora Multimedia, ZeeVee, Atlona, Dante, SDVoE and more, plus mixed audio, video and control profiles. Profiles are color coded and applied per port.
- Switch-to-switch links: with Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG, two M4250s connected together trunk their VLANs and bundle multiple links automatically.
- Fleet management: the NETGEAR Engage controller manages M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switches together.
M4250 management ports
All M4250 models share the same set of management ports, though where they sit (front or back) depends on the model.
- Console: an RJ45 RS232 straight-through serial port and a USB-C console port, for local CLI access.
- Out-of-band Ethernet: a 1G service port for a separate management network.
- USB-A storage: for logs, packet captures, configuration files and firmware images.
- Dual firmware: two firmware images and two configuration files, so updates cause minimal downtime.
Mounting and fan modes
- Rackmount models can be mounted reversed when you want the ports facing the front of the rack. A second, included pair of ears sets the switch back 2 in. (about 5 cm) to leave room for cables.
- Threaded holes underneath (4 x M5 on a 50 x 100 mm VESA pattern) and on the front (1 x M10 for clamps) allow mounting outside a rack.
- Desktop models are meant for conference rooms, mobile studios, under a table or behind a screen, and mount with side flanges.
- Fans are software controlled. Most models can switch the fans off entirely when the room temperature and PoE load are low enough, and offer Quiet and Cool modes otherwise. The M4250-9G1F-PoE+ is fanless.
Fan-off mode depends on ambient temperature and PoE load. Check your model's limits before closing it inside a cabinet or ceiling space.
