8 gigabit ports8 on the panel
Ports 1 to 8 are 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports that set their speed automatically.
Each port has two LEDs: the left one lights for a 100 Mbps link, the right one for 10 Mbps, and both for 1000 Mbps. They blink with traffic.
Port 1 (PoE-PD)1 on the panel
On later GS108T units, port 1 is marked PoE-PD. Plug it into an 802.3af PoE switch or injector and the switch powers itself from that cable, so it needs no power adapter at the far end of a run.
If both the adapter and PoE are connected, the adapter takes over. Port 1 still passes data like the other seven ports.
12 V DC input1 on the panel
The power socket on the back takes the included 12 V, 1 A adapter. The switch draws up to 8.5 W.
Check your hardware version. The first GS108T (2007 manual) has no PoE. Units sold from hardware v2 on have the PoE-PD label on port 1. Look at the label on the front before you rely on PoE power.
Buttons and lights on the front
- Power/Status LED: solid green when running, solid yellow while booting, off with no power.
- Reset button restarts the switch with its current settings, the same as unplugging it.
- Factory Defaults button is recessed. Hold it for at least two seconds to wipe the settings: the password goes back to password and the IP to 192.168.0.239 if no DHCP server answers.
First-time setup
- Connect the switch to your network and plug in the power adapter.
- If your network has a DHCP server, the switch picks up an address. Find it with NETGEAR's Smart Wizard Discovery utility.
- With no DHCP server, the switch uses 192.168.0.239. Set your computer to an address in 192.168.0.x with mask 255.255.255.0.
- Open the switch address in a web browser and log in with the default password, password. Change it right away under Security.
From the web interface you can set VLANs, port trunking (link aggregation), QoS, IGMP snooping, jumbo frames, port mirroring and storm control. Out of the box it works as a plain unmanaged switch.
Where it fits in a rack
The GS108T is 158 mm (6.2 in.) wide and 27 mm (1.1 in.) high, so it sits on a rack shelf or a desk with the four rubber feet. It also has two slots on the bottom for wall mounting with the included screws. Leave room behind it for the power adapter cable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the default IP address of the NETGEAR GS108T?+
It takes an address from DHCP. With no DHCP server it uses 192.168.0.239 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
What is the default GS108T password?+
The default password is password. Pressing the Factory Defaults button sets it back to that.
Can the GS108T be powered by PoE?+
Later units (hardware v2) can: port 1 is marked PoE-PD and accepts 802.3af PoE power. The first version has no PoE, so check the front label.
Does the GS108T supply PoE to other devices?+
No. Port 1 can receive PoE to power the switch, but no port supplies power to cameras or access points.
How do I reset a GS108T to factory settings?+
Hold the recessed Factory Defaults button on the front for at least two seconds, or use Maintenance, Reset, Factory Default in the web interface.
Is the GS108T rack mountable?+
No rack ears are listed. It is a desktop switch that can also mount on a wall, so in a rack it goes on a shelf.
Plan this smart switch in your rack
The GS108T is in the Netgear library for DaMatrix, with every port mapped so you can drag it into a rack, patch it and print the documentation.
