Every port on the R7000, explained

Click a card to light up those ports on the panel above.

4 gigabit LAN ports4 on the panel

Ports 1 to 4 are gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for computers, a NAS, a game console or an uplink to a switch. Each port has its own LED on top: white for a gigabit link, amber for 100 or 10 Mbps.

Internet (WAN) port1 on the panel

The yellow port is the gigabit Internet port. Connect it to your cable or DSL modem. If your service has no modem, connect your main Ethernet line here.

In access point mode this port connects to a LAN port on your other router instead.

USB ports1 on the panel

The rear USB 2.0 port takes a USB storage drive. There is also a USB 3.0 port on the front of the router (not shown on this panel). Drives on either port can be shared on your network with ReadySHARE.

DC power input1 on the panel

The barrel socket at the right end takes the included 12 V, 3.5 A power adapter. Press the Power On/Off button next to it to turn the router on.

Buttons and lights

  • Reset button is the small hole at the left end of the rear panel. Hold it for at least 10 seconds, until the Power LED blinks white, to return the router to factory settings.
  • Power On/Off button sits between the USB port and the DC input.
  • Top panel has the status LEDs plus the WiFi On/Off and WPS buttons. Hold the WiFi button for two seconds to turn both radios on or off.
  • Antennas: extend the three antennas on the back before you place the router.

Cable and log in

  1. Unplug your modem, then plug it back in (remove and refit its backup battery if it has one).
  2. Connect the modem to the yellow Internet port with the included Ethernet cable.
  3. Connect the power adapter and press the Power On/Off button. The Power LED turns solid white when the router is ready.
  4. On a connected computer or phone, open http://www.routerlogin.net (or http://192.168.1.1).
  5. Log in with user name admin. The factory password is password; change it during setup.

Access point and bridge mode

Both modes are set under ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Router / AP / Bridge Mode.

  • AP mode adds the R7000 as WiFi for a network that already has a router. Connect its Internet port to a LAN port on the other router, select AP Mode and let the other router assign its IP address.
  • Bridge mode joins the R7000 to another router over WiFi, so wired devices plugged into its LAN ports (a TV, console or NAS) reach the network without a cable run. You need the other router's network name, security mode, password and band.

Use different WiFi settings. In AP mode NETGEAR recommends giving each router its own WiFi settings, or turning off WiFi on the other router.

Where it fits next to a rack

The R7000 is a desktop router, 280 mm (11 in.) wide and 49 mm (1.9 in.) tall, with three antennas that stand above it. NETGEAR recommends placing it up high and away from large metal surfaces, so on a rack shelf it works best at the top of an open rack, not inside a closed metal cabinet.
