Every port on the rear panel, explained
Click a card to light up those ports on the panel above.
4 network ports4 on the panel
Four integrated NICs in a row: either four 10/100/1000 RJ45 ports, or two gigabit RJ45 plus two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, depending on the network daughter card fitted.
Link light green means full speed, amber means a lower speed; the activity light blinks green when data moves.
iDRAC7 Enterprise port1 on the panel
The dedicated management port, far left. It only works with an iDRAC7 Enterprise license installed.
Patch it to your management network for remote power, console and firmware updates.
Serial port1 on the panel
A 9-pin DTE serial connector (16550 compatible) for a serial console.
VGA video1 on the panel
A 15-pin VGA output for a monitor or KVM. The 8 drive system has a second VGA port on the front.
2 USB ports2 on the panel
Two stacked USB 2.0 ports for a keyboard, mouse or KVM dongle. There is one more USB port inside the chassis.
System ID connector1 on the panel
A small round jack for the optional system status light on the cable management arm. The blue ID button is just to its left.
Power supplies2 on the panel
Two hot-swap supplies on the right, each with its own inlet. See power supplies for the matching rules.
Feed them from separate circuits so one can drop without taking the server down.
Also on the back
- PCIe slots: this 8 drive layout has two, on riser 2 (left) and riser 3 (right). The 10 drive and 3-slot 8 drive layouts add riser 1.
- System ID button: press to flash the ID lights so someone can find this server. Hold for more than 5 seconds during a hung POST for BIOS progress mode, or more than 15 seconds to reset iDRAC (if not disabled in F2 iDRAC setup).
PowerEdge R620 memory limits
There are 24 DIMM sockets taking DDR3 ECC memory at 1066, 1333, 1600 or 1866 MT/s. The maximum depends on the DIMM type:
| DIMM type | Sizes | Maximum RAM |
|---|---|---|
| LRDIMM | 8, 16, 32 or 64 GB | 1536 GB |
| RDIMM | 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 GB | 512 GB |
| UDIMM | 2, 4 or 8 GB | 128 GB |
The minimum is 2 GB with one processor or 4 GB with two.
PCIe risers
| Riser | Slot |
|---|---|
| Riser 1 | Two half-height, half-length slots: x8 and x16 |
| Riser 2 | One half-height, half-length slot, x8 or x16 |
| Riser 3 | One full-height three-quarter-length x16, or half-height half-length x16 |
Riser 1 and the x16 link on riser 2 only work with both processors installed.
PowerEdge R620 power supplies
Two hot-swap bays take AC supplies of 495 W, 750 W or 1100 W, or DC supplies of 750 W or 1100 W. Both must be the same type and wattage, and AC and DC can't be mixed.
| Supply handle light | What it means |
|---|---|
| Off | No power connected |
| Green | Power connected and the supply is working |
| Flashing amber | Problem with the supply |
| Flashing green | Hot-added supply doesn't match the other one |
When fixing a mismatch, replace only the supply with the flashing light. Two identical supplies on different input voltages can also report a mismatch.

Rack and room requirements
- Normal operation is 50 to 95 F (10 to 35 C) at 10 to 80 percent humidity, out of direct sunlight.
- It can run from 41 to 104 F for up to 10 percent of the year, and from 23 to 113 F for up to 1 percent, but only with redundant power supplies and without LRDIMMs, GPUs or PCIe SSDs in that range.
- Don't cold-start it below 41 F (5 C). The operating altitude limit is 10,000 ft.
