48 PoE+ access ports48 on the panel
Standard RJ45 gigabit ports in four blocks of 12. The top row is odd numbers and the bottom row is even, counting left to right.
Each port can power a device: up to 15.4 W for 802.3af gear and up to 30 W for 802.3at (PoE+) gear such as access points, IP phones and PTZ cameras.
Copper runs can be up to 100 m (328 ft). Use Cat5e or better.
4 SFP+ uplinks4 on the panel
Fixed uplink cages on the right. Each takes a 1G SFP or a 10G SFP+ module, so you can start on 1G fiber or copper SFPs and move to 10G later.
Use Cisco supported transceivers and keep fiber within its bend radius when you dress the cables.
USB console port1 on the panel
A 5-pin mini-USB port for setting the switch up from a laptop. See console access for drivers and settings.
While a USB cable is plugged in it takes over from the RJ45 console on the rear.
USB storage ports2 on the panel
Take a USB flash drive (Cisco supports 128 MB to 8 GB, FAT formatted) for copying configs and software images. In a stack, a drive in any member can upgrade the whole stack.
Also on the front
- Blue beacon (UID): press it, or turn it on from the CLI, to flag this switch so someone in the rack can find it. A matching beacon LED is on the rear.
- Mode button: cycles the port LEDs between status, speed, duplex, stack and PoE views. See LED meanings.
- Status LEDs: system, active, stack, PoE and console.
On the rear
- Two power supply slots (A and B) and two fixed fans
- RJ45 console port and a 10/100/1000 management (MGMT) port
- StackWise-80 stacking ports and the rear beacon LED
Plug the MGMT port into a laptop or a separate management network only. Never patch it to a port on the same switch or the same stack.
Power supplies and PoE budget
The switch ships with one power supply and has a second slot for redundancy or extra PoE. The PoE budget is shared by all 48 ports, so plan your access points and cameras against it.
| Power supply | PoE available | With a second supply |
|---|---|---|
| PWR-C5-1KWAC (1000 W AC, default) | 740 W | 1440 W |
| PWR-C5-715WDC (715 W DC) | 485 W | 970 W |
Each supply has two LEDs. Input green means AC is present. Output green means it is powering the switch; red means the output has failed.
Example: 20 access points at 25 W each use 500 W, which fits on one 1 kW supply with room left for phones.
Console access and first-time setup
You can configure the switch from the command line over either console port, or from the web interface once it has an IP address.
- Baud
- 9600
- Data bits
- 8
- Parity
- None
- Stop bits
- 1
- Flow control
- None
- Connect a USB-A to mini-USB cable (5-pin, not 4-pin) to the front console port, or the supplied RJ45 to DB-9 cable to the rear console port.
- Install a driver if needed. Windows needs the Cisco USB console driver or the Silicon Labs CP210x driver, depending on which USB chip your switch has (Device Manager shows which). On a Mac, the Cisco chip needs no driver; the Silicon Labs chip needs the Silicon Labs driver.
- Open a terminal program at 9600 8N1 and power on the switch.
Console output goes to both ports, but only one accepts input. The USB port wins while it is plugged in. If you stacked your switches, you can set up the whole stack from any member's console.
C9200L LED meanings
Press the Mode button to choose what the port LEDs show. Pressing it on one switch changes the view on every switch in the stack.
| LED and color | What it means |
|---|---|
| System green | Running normally |
| System blinking green | Booting and loading software |
| System amber | Has power but is not working properly |
| Port off (status mode) | No link, or the port is shut down |
| Port green / blinking green | Link up / passing traffic |
| Port amber | Blocked by Spanning Tree; normal for up to 30 seconds after a port comes up |
| Port alternating green and amber | Link fault (errors on the cable or the far end) |
| Speed mode | Off 10 Mb/s, green 100 Mb/s, slow blink 1 Gb/s |
| Duplex mode | Green full duplex, off half duplex |
| Active green / blinking | Active switch of the stack (or standalone) / standby member |
| Stack mode | The port LED that blinks green shows this switch's member number |
| PoE port green | Port is supplying power |
| PoE alternating green and amber | Power denied: the device would exceed the PoE budget |
| PoE blinking amber | PoE fault or a software limit was hit; check the cable and device |
| Console green | USB console is in use |
Rack mounting and installation
- The switch comes with 19 in. brackets. 23 in., 24 in. and ETSI racks need the optional bracket kit.
- Attach each bracket with at least two flat-head screws, front or rear mount.
- Load racks bottom to top with the heaviest gear lowest, and fit stabilizers first if the rack has them.
- Leave room at the front for patch cables and at the back for power cords. Keep the vents clear and don't let other gear exhaust into the intake.
- Keep the air around it under 113 F (45 C). Closed cabinets run hotter than the room, so measure inside the rack.
- Seat the power supplies firmly before you move or mount the switch.
Stacking C9200L switches
Up to eight C9200L switches can be stacked and managed as one switch with StackWise-80. Stacking adapters must be installed in the rear stack ports; they are ordered separately if the switch wasn't bought with stacking.
Stack cables come in 0.5 m (STACK-T4-50CM), 1 m (STACK-T4-1M) and 3 m (STACK-T4-3M). Don't coil them tighter than their minimum bend radius.
Frequently asked questions
What is the PoE budget of the C9200L-48P-4X?+
740 W with the default 1 kW AC power supply. Adding a second 1 kW supply raises it to 1440 W. With the 715 W DC supply it is 485 W, or 970 W with two.
How much power can one port deliver?+
Up to 15.4 W for 802.3af devices and up to 30 W for 802.3at (PoE+) devices, as long as the total stays inside the switch's budget.
What are the console settings for a Catalyst 9200L?+
9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control, on either the front mini-USB console or the rear RJ45 console.
Do the SFP+ ports accept 1G SFP modules?+
Yes. Each of the four uplinks takes a 1G SFP or a 10G SFP+ module.
How many C9200L switches can be stacked?+
Up to eight with StackWise-80. You need stacking adapters in the rear ports and StackWise cables.
What does an amber port LED mean?+
In status mode, solid amber means Spanning Tree is blocking the port. That is normal for up to about 30 seconds after the port comes up or is reconfigured.
Plan this network switch in your rack
The C9200L-48P-4X is in the Cisco library for DaMatrix, with every port mapped so you can drag it into a rack, patch it and print the documentation.
